In mid 19th century a farmer named Jon Sundmann and his wife Kristín lived by the lake. The story says that one night a monster broke up through the ice on the lake and destroyed a large part of the farmhouse. The farmer was away that night and the day after his wife fled with their children. No one has lived by the lake ever since. Many witnesses came to look at the house and the hole in the 70 cm. thick ice. Nowadays it is a popular place for trout fishing. (source)
